These interpretive disagreements eventually alienated members and undermined mobilization. Organizational failures such as these allude to the limits social movements face in manipulating gender for institutional purposes. Volume The work of disindentification requires resituating the politics that personal- ize poverty and wealth into the historical conditions that make each possible and apparently natural. Social science itself is a cultural activity — a kind of performance that enacts itself. To varying degrees, research paradigms necessarily reproduce commonsense knowledge about how the world exists and how it works.

In order to continue to develop a vision for social research capable of being fully compatible with a vision of a socially just world, we must consistently explore not only our own locations as researchers but also the foundations and assump- tions of social research paradigms. Research paradigms provide frameworks for recognizing what we see and for understanding its relevance and importance. Yet research paradigms are his- torically produced social formations; it is important that scholars not reify notions of class or the analytical constructs used for social research on class.
By working at the constitutive frontiers of language, it is possible to imagine new socialities, new subjectivities, and to conceptualize different, perhaps more effective, strategies for social justice.
It is not just that the people today understand class in ways quite different from 19th-century Europe, but that social researchers must understand their tasks differently as well. Unlike the Federal poverty line, standards for economic self-sufficiency calcu- late the costs of food, rent, transportation, healthcare, taxes, childcare and mis- cellaneous expenses such as birthday gifts.
What Is Cultural Hegemony?
This distinction is critical. Standards for economic self-sufficiency established by states, and non-profits within states, are more precise in their calculations and also reflect regional differences. Surveys of want ads in daily papers quickly demonstrate that in large US cities it would be quite difficult to find housing this inexpensive. States may set their own minimum wage limits higher than the Federal standard and some do.
Regions with lower rents also have lower minimum wages. No figures are avail- able for the Gramsci —6, —19 argued that common sense is an incoherent and inconsequential set of generally held assumptions and beliefs shared by a society. Bracketed ellipses indicate that I edited out material. Ellipses without brackets are conversational pauses. These notations are not as complex as those used in conversation analysis but are similarly intended to provide a fuller context for readers.
